Abstract

One of the main stylistic devices of Ilia‘s prose is so called "others‘ speech" which includes folk sayings, aphorisms, proverbs, quotes. Each of them has their own function in the works of the famous Georgian writer and they affect the formation of his individual artistic style. A quote becomes the belonging of the both - the stranger and the author. The role of quotation is to create a sense of semantic tension in a very small episode of the text.
The abundance of the quotes are eye catching in the work "The story of The Beggar" The author uses them systematically and creates a certain semantic chain and they all have different functions in the text according to the writer‘s aim. The choice, from which texts the author uses quotations in the dialogue, has a great importance. Ilia Chavchavadze mainly uses them from "The Knight in The Panther‘s Skin" by Shota Rustaveli and the "Bible". Such choice reveals the writer‘s ideological positions. He connected these two masterpieces and on their contents he created the original plot, idea and artistic images of the story.
