Abstract

The presented paper discusses microtoponyms of the village Obcha in Baghdadi (the first and second Obcha), one of the municipalities of Imereti. The place names (up to 400 units) are arranged in alphabetical order and analyzed from both structural and semantic points of view. Some of the microtoponyms are listed in various documents and dictionaries, while some are recorded by us directly in the field and are not present in relevant studies.

Archaeological materials and written sources about the village of Obcha are scarce. It is mentioned in Georgian historical monuments from the beginning of the 16th century. Regarding the name, there are both scientific opinions and folk traditions.

The toponyms of the analyzed village are diverse in form. There are examples of suffix, prefix and prefix-suffix formation, as well as the composite names.

Toponyms formed with suffixes are the most common: -eb: bzhol-eb-I; tkeml-eb-i; seul->soul: kodala-soul-i, Vachai-soul-i; -our//-oul: tokh-our-i, kupr-oul-i; Examples of prefix-suffix formation are frequent: sa-kip-yan-o, sa-rekh-e, sa-chkef-el-a, sa-tke-ur-a, na-mekh-ar-i; Prefix formation: na-sakhl-i, na-sakdr-i, na-mosakhl-i, na-dzrakh-i. Infixed, simple-based toponyms are relatively less attested: Esteri, Jvari, Dube. There are many toponyms of composite structure: Didkunchulo, Tsivkana, Patara Mindori. Vaketsiflari... Kodis dobillo, Tkis piri..

The microtoponymy of the village Obcha in Baghdati municipality clearly shows the variety of Georgian word formation.
